Most, but not all, of Proverbs was written by King Solomon. It was written between the 10th and 6th centuries B.C. It was written to young adults needing wisdom and to those looking for instruction on wise living. The first seven verses give the motto of the book. The seventh verse summarizes the motto of the book in one sentence.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
What does it mean to fear God?
To fear God doesn’t mean cowering in the corner. It means taking God seriously. God is not an accessory. God created us, and he is involved in every moment of our lives. To ignore God is foolishness. We are not to trifle with God but recognize how much God loves us and that we are created to enjoy him. We will never find happiness in this world apart from giving our lives to him. We also must realize there are real life consequence when we choose to live a life in rebellion against him.
What are some easy ways to avoid foolish living?
- Choose the right friends (Proverbs 1:10-19). It doesn’t take long for poor friends to lead us astray. What kind of friends do you have? Do they love Jesus? Are they encouraging you in godly living? Can you pray with them? Are they leading you to waste your time? If not, make a choice and change friends, even if it means you are lonely until you meet better ones. As it says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, bad company corrupts good morals.
- Avoid dishonesty, it will ruin your life (Proverbs 1:18-19). Even a bird is wise enough to avoid a net when it sees the trap being set. Dishonesty is a trap. It is a trap we set for ourselves. We will get caught in the consequences of our own sin. Dishonest living is always foolish living. Conduct yourself truthfully and honestly in all your ways and avoid setting a trap for yourself.
- Seek Jesus by talking to him in prayer. The New Testament tells us the best way to live wisely is to pray and seek Jesus. The Bible describes Jesus as the one in whom all wisdom dwells (1 Corinthians 1:30). The closer we get to Christ, the wiser we become.
