Does God Want Us To Be Happy?

After Tom Brady won his third Superbowl, he was interviewed by Steve Kroft. An obviously unhappy Brady said, “Why do I have three Super Bowl rings, and still think there’s something greater out there for me? I think, ‘God, it’s gotta be more than this…’” In other words, even if you were as rich, famous, and successful as Tom Brady, that doesn’t mean you would be happy.
When we turn to the Bible, we find that happiness will always escape up until we realize that true happiness can only come from God and what he has done for us through Jesus. That is the only happiness in our life that will stick. It is the only happiness that will stay. This means Christians are to be abnormally happy people. Let me explain why.
- The God we serve is always happy. If we serve a happy God, to properly represent Him we must be a happy people. Psalm 16:11 tells us that in God’s presence is fullness of joy. At his right hand are pleasures forevermore.
- The gospel message of what Jesus has done for us is a happy message. It is a message that should make people happy. This is why the gospel message of what Jesus has done for us is called the good news! It is news that should make us happy.
- Nobody will turn to Jesus if they don’t believe there is happiness to be found in Jesus. People will know if we serve a happy God only if they meet Christians who are happy people.
- The Bible commands us to be happy. Paul says in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice.” This could be translated as, “Be happy in the Lord always, and again I say be happy.” In this verse, Paul twice commands us to be happy. He tells us to find our happiness in God and what God has done for us! God will not command us to do what the Holy Spirit will not empower us to do. If you are unhappy today, go to God and ask him to help you better see what God has done for you in Jesus. Ask God to help you see how good God has been to you through Jesus by offering to forgive your sin by Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus also makes us into new people with new hearts. Jesus makes us the most loved and honored beings in the entire universe for all eternity when we repent of our sin and trust in Jesus to save us from our sin. We deserve none of this! If we keep our eyes on what God has done for us through His Son, how can we not be happy?
