Christmas from Isaiah
At school my daughter was told Christmas isn't about Santa Claus. It is about a chance to be kind and giving. Jesus was left out of Christmas, as he often is, in the interest of being politically correct and not offending other religions. This week we discover what makes the birth of Jesus so different from other religions. Christ's life and death was described in vivid detail hundreds of years before he came. This is something other religions do not have, the truth of a God who declares what will happen in history.

Christmas from Isaiah
How much did Jesus know about the suffering he would face on the cross? How did he make it through without giving in to sin? In Isaiah 50, we have a unique window into the suffering Jesus faced and how he made it through. We learn how to face our suffering from following the example of Jesus.

In this series, we cover seven core values that drive the Faith Church experience. Our seventh core value is culture. Many churches encourage you to escape culture and condemn it. You are encouraged to live in separation from the world. At Faith, we encourage the opposite. We want to engage culture and redeem it for the glory of Christ. Join us as we explain why we are heading in the opposite direction.

Our third core value is we believe it is the simple gospel message that has the power to change lives and grow the church. The simple gospel message is in short supply. A survey from LifeWay Resources of 450 American sermons randomly pulled from across the country revealed only 6% contained the entire gospel message. A natural strategy is to use anything in place of the Gospel to grow the church. At Faith, we believe the power to change lives and grow the church is in of the simple message of the gospel.

What does a life that pleases God look like? Does it mean our theology is tight? Does it mean we attend Bible studies, pray and read the Bible every day? While spiritual disciplines are good, we love God by loving his people. We are built for others. As we wrap up the Gospel of John, the final chapter challenges us to move from right beliefs about Christ to caring for others in the name of Christ as the way we express our love to God.

The church often talks about the cross what Christ achieved for us on it. The early church in the book of Acts didn't talk about what Christ did on the cross. All twelve sermons in Acts talk about what Christ made possible through the empty tomb. The tomb is empty. Jesus loves you. He is alive and hears your prayers. That is the message of every spiritual revival in history. It is the resurrection that changes everything.

Today, churches feel like a coffee shops. Preachers dress in jeans and shirts from The Buckle instead of suits. There are video projection screens and colored lights. Sometimes church feels more like entertainment. How much should the church become like the world? What would Jesus do? In John 17, we look at Jesus' prayer for how his disciples would carry on the mission of connecting people to God through his life. His prayer is that we would be profane in the way we do it. What does that mean? Join us as discover what it means to be a profane church that follows a profane savior.

In minutes, Jesus' betrayal will begin. For the disciples, everything is about to change. The changes will not just be in how they know Christ but in how they will know God and pray to him. For the first time, they will pray to God in Jesus' name. Jesus promises that God the Father will always answer those prayers. What does it mean to pray in Christ's name? What can we expect when we pray in his name? In this message, we discover how praying in Jesus' name changes everything.

In the New Testament, we read about the Holy Spirit empowering God’s people for amazing miracles. Sometimes the Holy Spirit miraculously healed the sick. Occasionally people spoke in a foreign language because the Holy Spirit enabled. Most have not experienced the Holy Spirit working in those miraculous ways. Sometimes, we wonder if the Holy Spirit is working in us at all. In this message, we discover how the Holy Spirit works today in ways we probably didn’t expect.

Around the world, Christians suffer. In Pakistan, Christian women are gang raped. In China, men are set outside naked in the winter and doused with cold water, left to freeze to death because they shared Christian literature. In the Sudan, children are hacked open with machetes and their mothers have their hands hacked off, all for claiming Christ as the only one who can save them from their sin. Why are Christians persecuted so mercilessly, and without cause? In John 15, Jesus tells us why following Jesus draws persecution like blood in the water for a shark.

A recent Pew Forum survey revealed 57 percent of evangelical church attenders say many religions lead to eternal life. 70 percent of Americans with a religious affiliation share that view. Today, we don't believe everyone has a right to their opinion but we now believe all opinions are equally right. In John 14, Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure and for what they need to know to keep them on the mission once he is gone. A big part of that is understand how unique Christ is. As we study this chapter, we won't just learn what kept the disciples on mission but we learn how to stay on the mission Jesus gives to us today.

On October 2, 2006, Charles Roberts burst into an Amish one-room schoolhouse in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He shot ten girls, ages 6-13, killing five, before committing suicide. Incidents like this make the news, but what kept this in the news was the response of the Amish. The Amish visited Charles Roberts family after the shooting to tell them they were extended forgiveness. Members of the Amish community visited Charles Roberts widow, parents and parents-in-law to comfort them in their loss. One Amish father held Charles Roberts' sobbing father in his arms for an hour. The Amish even set up a charity fund for Charles Robert's widow and children. Over 30 Amish attended Charles Roberts' funeral. When does this kind of love come from? It is scandalous. When the Amish were asked how they could forgive and love, they only had one name,… Jesus.

Applause… We want them. It is hard to live without them. What should we do when we can't make everyone happy? As Jesus enters Jerusalem, it is the high point of his ministry. A crowd of thousands cheer his arrival and ask him to be king. He can't make everyone happy. To gain the applause of God the Father, he needs to turn his back on the intoxicating pleasure of the crowd and embrace a horrifying death for us. Like Jesus, we also need to choose whose applause we will live for, our friends and neighbors or our Heavenly Fathers. Like, Jesus, to gain the applause of God the Father will involve a path of suffering. The applause of God the Father are worth it in the end.

In 1994-1995, Robin Leach starred in the television series, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. The program featured those who lived in excess. Their overdone lifestyles became a mocking form of entertainment. Reacting to the excesses of our culture, Christians pride themselves on frugality. In so doing, we may have become men and women of cheap worship who make too little of Jesus. In this part of the Bible, the apostle John teaches us the more we know Jesus , the more extravagant our lives will become.

In 1998, scientists used the Hubble Space Telescope to examine the edges of our universe. To their surprise, they discovered the universe was expanding at a much slower rate than expected. To account for this difference, they hypothesized that 95% of the universe must contain some kind of Dark Matter and Dark Energy that we can not detect. This Sunday, the 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens face one another in the Super Bowl. Who will win? This week, Sports Illustrated's cover story asked the question, "Does God care who wins the Super Bowl?" Only 27% of Americans said, "Yes." Most Americans believe either God doesn't know or doesn't care about football. How much control does God have over our life? How much does God ordain of our future? In Daniel 8, we discover the answer.

Daniel 7 begins the apocalyptic section of the book. What is God telling us when it comes to a metal-mouthed monsters and a little horn that insult God? This chapter is not all difficulty and perplexity. It has a clear message to play hard for the team of Jesus. While the battle is rough, keep your eyes on the prize of reigning with Jesus. If we stay faithful to the end, we will be on the winning team when the dust finally settles.

Daniel
Mark Bowden recently released his new book, The Finish. It details the ten year hunt of Osama Bin Laden. It begins with nothing more than a fictitious name and ends ten years later with his body sinking in the sea. Daniel 5 is a similar story. It is the hunting down of another evil dictator name Belshazzar. His death warrant was not signed by the CIA, but by the fingers of God inscribed it on the wall of his palace right before his eyes. It didn't take God ten years to carry out. In less than an hour, God overthrew the most powerful city in the world.
