Matthew 2:1-12 - Jesus Changed Education, Medicine, And Science

In the 1946 film classic,
It’s a Wonderful Life, the character played by Jimmy Stewart gets a chance to see what life would be like had he never been born. In many ways, that movie is the springboard for this series. The film’s main point is that each person’s life impacts everyone else’s. Had they never been born, there would be gaping holes left in their absence. This series aims to help us realize Jesus's enormous impact on history.

Matthew 1:18-2:12 - Christmas Is About Worship!

Christmas is about worship! In Matthew's Christmas story, we see three different people worship Jesus. The way they worship Jesus tells how they value Jesus. In the same way, the way we worship Jesus reveals the truth about the way we feel about Him. Join the CrossWinds Church Spirit Lake campus as we celebrate Jesus' birth by giving Jesus our best in worship!

NOTE: When researching for this sermon, I asked Google the distance between Babylon and Jerusalem. Google coughed up an answer of 1,679 miles. That is the distance I used in the sermon. That is wrong! The distance is 679 miles! The web site google referenced had a "1" in front of the number! Oops! The point I was making is still valid. It is a long distance to travel to see Jesus. This error is in the audio and video. I corrected the error in the manuscript. The moral of the story is… DOUBLE CHECK GOOGLE!

Romans 6:1-14 - The Gift Of A Changed Life

Our family placed presents under the tree before Christmas Eve. The week before Christmas meant a pile of presents for all to see. As an only child, I was thrilled that most had my name on them! It felt like I hit the jackpot! Christmas morning was different. I learned all the presents were not the same. Many of them were needed but less than thrilling. They were packages of socks, underwear, and a new shirt for church. That was not what a young boy was looking for on Christmas morning. Thankfully all present were not that way. Some were exactly what I wanted. They were gifts like a remote controlled car or a shooting gallery. That is what made Christmas morning exciting for a boy. In a similar way, this message may look like it is just another ordinary message. It is just another present under the tree. As we explore Romans 6, we will see this messages is much more than we expect. It is a gift we desperately want and need. It is the gift of victory over sin! Join me in learning how we can have victory over the power of sin in our life. Together, let's unwrap the gift of a changed life.

Hebrews 1:1-3 - Jesus Is Greater

In C.S. Lewis' novel, Prince Caspian, there is a famous scene where Lucy rushes to Aslan the lion, falls between his front paws and buries her face in his mane. Aslan the lion represents Jesus. When Lucy is resting in his mane, she says these famous words. "Your bigger!", says Lucy. Aslan says, "That is because you are older, little one… every year you grow, you will find me bigger." C.S. Lewis' point is the more we grow in Christ, the bigger Christ becomes. In the first message of this Christmas series, we study the opening verses of the book of Hebrews to help us see that Jesus is greater and bigger than we can comprehend.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 - The Gospel in the Old Testament

At school my daughter was told Christmas isn't about Santa Claus. It is about a chance to be kind and giving. Jesus was left out of Christmas, as he often is, in the interest of being politically correct and not offending other religions. This week we discover what makes the birth of Jesus so different from other religions. Christ's life and death was described in vivid detail hundreds of years before he came. This is something other religions do not have, the truth of a God who declares what will happen in history.

Psalm 110 - The Rest of the Christmas Story (Christmas Eve 2011)

Psalm 110 is the most quoted Psalm from the Old Testament in the New. It is also the most quoted chapter from the Old Testament in the New. Psalm 110 vets 1 is quoted 24 times. This Psalm was central to the New Testament writers understand of who Jesus is and what he came to do. Unlike we often consider Jesus, it is not a Psalm about Christ's humility but his authority. It is not primarily about his first coming but about his second, when he will crush, destroy and butcher his enemies. It is the rest of the Christmas story we never hear.

Psalm 2 - Immediate and Unconditional Surrender

We are told to invite Jesus into our hearts. The decision to invite Jesus into our hearts sounds like deciding on having cream or sugar in our coffee. It is far too self orientated. According to Psalm 2, Jesus doesn't ask for us to invite him in, he commands us to repent of our sin. We must flee to him as the only shield that can protect us from God's white hot wrath. We are commanded to immediately and unconditionally surrender to Christ's rulership in our life or face Christ's terrifying wrath when he returns.
